Marketing and distribution

Distribution and Marketing

The term film distribution means: The distribution of a film is the process through which a movie is made available to watch for an audience by a film distributor.

The film distributors have multiple jobs such as identifying their target audience, then considering reasons as to why they would go and see it, estimating the revenue potential across all formats of the film's release, developing plans and partnerships in order to raise awareness of and interest in the film, aim to convert as much interest as possible into cinema visits and persuading exhibitors to play the film.

A marketing plan is part of an overall business plan. It is said that solid marketing strategy is the foundation of a well written marketing plan. while a marketing plan contains a list of actions, a marketing plan without a sound strategic foundation is of little use. Below is an example of the basic layout of a film's marketing or 'Release Plan'

Every film has its own tailor made distribution plan which the distributor develops in consultation with the producers and/or studio as appropriate. The most important and strategic decisions a distributor has to \make are the decisions when and how to release the film in order to optimize profits.
